This week Chuck Feeney disolved Atlantic Philanthropies. During the organisation's lifetime it invested $8 billion,  $1.3 billion of which was in Ireland. Chuck Feeney is responsible for Ireland's world class third level education sector, the impact of such on Ireland is immense and continuing. He also brokered the first IRA ceasefire. Read the excellent story about how he made it and gave it all away in The Billionaire Who Wasn't by Conor O'Clery.

Microsoft Underwater Datacentre

Image: Microsoft

In 2018, Microsoft submerged a datacentre in the waters off Orkney in Scotland. The tube held 864 servers and 27.6 petabytes of storage and was intended to test the resilience of operating a data centre 117 feet in the ocean. It has now reached its end of life and has been resurfaced to begin the recyling stage of the project. During its time operating underwater, the datacentre encountered a one eighth failure rate compared to land based data centres with the same components.
