Found This Year - the best movies, TV, music, books & comics in 2022

This year I started learning to play the guitar and in my research for my first purchase, I came across the PMTVUK YouTube channel. Dagan Wilson's guitar review videos on the channel are excellent. I've started watching them at night to wind down, sort of like a mindful guitar meditation.

TV in 2022

Andor

There were some great TV shows in 2022 but for me, Andor is head and shoulders above them all and in the same category as The Wire and The Sopranos. The 3/4 episode story arc structure really hooks you in, and the depth of the storytelling and the symbolism is fantastically close to reality.

Moon Knight

I was very excited for this, having read the graphic novel before seeing the TV show. Moon Knight delivered, and then some!

The Responder

Martin Freeman like you haven't seen him before, as a scouser bizzy! An excellent and gripping drama that stays with you long after it's over.

Paper Girls

I loved the graphic novels, and the Amazon Prime show did an excellent job with its own take on the nostalgia heavy story.

The Bear

I'm glad each episode of The Bear is only about 20 mins long, because you need to lie down and maybe have a cry after some of them. Best fly on the wall type drama in years.

Hector - Balkins go Baltics

Clár den céad scoth, arís ó Hector. I'm a big fan of Hector's travel programmes on TG4, and they are also a great way to keep your Irish learning ticking over. This excellent series from The Balkins to The Baltics was packed full of interesting visits, interviews, and history previously unknown to me.

We Crashed

I could not stop watching this car crash story, and couldn't wait for each new episode. Perhaps it was the schadenfreude, coupled with the CGI face prosthetics, and the fact that it wasn't too far from the real events.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

A proper Trek show, at last!

Wednesday

A late entrant for the year, but Tim Burton's creative quality places the show above other similar shows, plus it's The Addams Family! click click.

Movies in 2022

Image: Paramount Pictures

Top Gun: Maverick

I am the target audience for this film. Parking my adult opposition to U.S. military propaganda, I watched it and enjoyed it like I as 8 years old again.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

This is the craziest film I've ever seen, from the first scene to the last.

Lightyear

Better than I thought it would be. I can understand why Andy wanted the toy Buzz after watching it.

Slumberland

A fun, heartbreaking & heart-warming film. Have the tissues ready.

Music in 2022

Image: Cormac Begley

B - Cormac Begley

A whole album of Cormac Begley playing his signature bass concertina. It's amazing! I was lucky enough to see Cormac in concert twice this year, in the London Irish Centre and supporting Lisa O'Neill at the South Bank Centre, both fantastic concerts.

Compliance - Muse

My favourite track from Muse's new album Will Of The People

Books & Comics in 2022

Image: Image Comics, Declan Shalvey

Old Dog - Declan Shalvey

A washed up CIA agent gets put back into the field, at least that's what you think Old Dog is about! You'll have to read Declan Shalvey's excellent comic to find out what it's really about.

Four Thousand Weeks - Oliver Burkeman

A gripping read that shines a light on all the assumptions you have about how to go about living and making the most of your life. A timely new year read.

Doughnut Economics - Kay Raworth

Easy to understand, with actionable takeaways for anyone, with or without an economics degree. It also highlights how current economic thinking needs to change to put the planet first instead of treating environmental destruction as an externality. Importantly, the book provides a framework on how to change to thrive above the social floor and within the boundaries of the planet.
