Natrium Molten Salt HALEU Nuclear Reactor

Nuclear reactor company Natrium, which is backed by Bill Gates' Terrapower, has received a US$80m Department of Energy grant to build a demonstration reactor by the mid 2020s. The 345MWe reactor can power 225,000 homes and uses molten salt as an energy storage and transfer system, which is safer than pressurised water and removes the need for a large amount of concrete shielding.

Iron As Renewable Fuel

Working with researchers from TU Eindhoven, the Swinkels Family Brewers in The Netherlands are the first to employ at scale the burning of Iron as a renewable fuel. Finely ground iron powder burns cleanly at high temperatures and produces iron oxide (rust) as its only emission. Best of all, this rust can be reenrgised back in to iron powder using electricity, for use as a combustable source of energy again!

David Attenborough's A Life On Our Planet

This week I watched David Attenborough's excellent documentary film A Life On Our Planet on Netflix. David himself describes the film as his witness statement of the destruction of the bio-sphere that he has witnessed in his lifetime. It is harrowing viewing but ends in an optimistic call to action about what needs to be done to stop ourselves from destroying the planet. It is mandatory viewing for everyone, especially for those with children or in positions of power or influence.
